History

Vidigal’s history began in the early 20th century when settlers first established themselves in the area. Many of these early inhabitants were workers employed in the affluent neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. The favela is named after a former military commander, Major Miguel Nunes Vidigal. Over the following decades, Vidigal grew steadily despite difficult living conditions and a lack of basic infrastructure.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Vidigal was heavily influenced by drug cartels, leading to high crime rates. The situation began to stabilize with the introduction of the Pacification Program in 2012, which increased police presence and helped reduce violence.

In recent years, Vidigal has experienced a renaissance. The increasing popularity among tourists and artists has turned the favela into a cultural hub. Local initiatives promote art, music, and dance, making Vidigal a vibrant and creative neighborhood. The growth of tourism has also led to economic improvements, although many residents still face social and economic challenges.
