Rocinha is the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro and is considered one of the most famous in the world. It is located on a hillside near the city’s wealthier districts and is characterized by its dense construction, narrow alleys, and makeshift buildings. History
Rocinha began to take shape in the 1920s when people from rural areas of Brazil migrated to Rio de Janeiro in search of work. However, many of these migrants could not afford housing in the city and started building their homes on the hillsides, which were uninhabited at the time. In the following decades, the favela grew rapidly, both in population and in construction. In the 1970s, the government began to address the urbanization of favelas, but the efforts were often insufficient. Rocinha continued to develop largely without state support and today stands as a symbol of the social and economic challenges facing Brazil. In recent years, there have been increased efforts to improve living conditions in Rocinha, including infrastructure projects and social programs. Despite these initiatives, the favela remains a place of extreme contrasts, where poverty and community spirit coexist side by side.
